I have also constructed simulated images of the Perseus radio halo, in
a similar manner to the Coma halo (Tribble
1991b). A magnetic field is defined on a 128^3 grid, the emissivity
assumed to vary with radius according to equations. (9), (10) and (11),
and a surface brightness image made. An example image is shown in Fig.
3, where the magnetic field scale length is 15 kpc (I take H_0 = 50
km/s/Mpc) with an assumed r_c of 400 kpc. This image has been
smoothed to the 50''25 kpc
resolution of the image by Burns et al. (1992) and, following an
argument similar to that for the Coma cluster (Tribble
1991b), shows that the magnetic field in the Perseus cluster is
tangled on scales below 15 kpc.
[Unfortunately I don't actually have a copy of Fig. 3 available at the
moment]
Fig 3. A simulation of the Perseus minihalo with a field scale
length of 15 kpc. This has been smoothed to 50'' resolution, with the
scale in kpc.
